How can Learning a New Language be Beneficial? / By: Razan Bawazir
Learning a new language might sound like a difficult activity, yet it has three major advantages on learners. The first and most important advantage of learning a new language is that it enriches learners’ knowledge by shedding light on a completely new culture. Language is not only about spoken words, but it has a deeper connection to culture. To illustrate, if an Arabic speaker decided to learn Spanish, he would notice a similarity between some words. As a result, he would be curious and would learn more about the culture to know the reason. Secondly, learning a new language can improve the learners’ cognitive abilities. It expands the learners’ memorization and concentration span drastically by challenging learners to focus on learning. In addition, it improves the learners’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Finally, meeting new people is an advantage of learning a new language. For instance, some learners use apps such as Cambly or Hello Talk to learn by talking to natives of this new language. This can result in making some long-lasting friendships with people who share the same interests. In brief, enriching knowledge, improving cognitive abilities, and meeting new people are the main advantages of learning a new language.
